RBS international student requirements:

To apply for an account you need to be completing a full-time undergraduate course lasting at least 2 years; completing a full-time postgraduate course; or training as a nurse, at a UK university or college of higher education. Please ensure you have read what documentation is also required.

You also need to be aged 17 or over and have a UK residential address.

As an international student, you can still apply for our Student Account with the small difference that you can't apply for Student Arranged Overdraft that is normally offered with our Student Account.  This means that you cannot apply for an arranged overdraft on your student account.

Important Information

RBS Mobile App is available on selected smartphones, to personal current account customers with a debit card, Digital Banking and UK mobile number.

For Get Cash, limits apply to the service, including a maximum withdrawal limit of £250 per day. The amount requested must be within the daily withdrawal limit for your debit card and there is a maximum limit of 2 Get Cash withdrawals per day. You must also have at least £25 available funds to withdraw from your account.

With Pay Your Contacts, as long as you're aged 16 or over, you can send money using our app to someone with a UK mobile number who has the RBS/NatWest Mobile Banking app. If they don’t have the app, don’t worry. You can still send them money as long as they have a valid UK Visa debit card, credit card or prepaid card. There’s also a maximum payment limit of £250 a day. You must also have available funds to send from your account.

RBS International Students What do I need to open an account?

Opening your Student Account as an international student is easy, but we will need some documentation from you to verify your identity and address in branch after you've applied. 

RBS require two forms of documentation:

  • One original document that confirms your identity
  • One original document that confirms your address whilst in the UK

You will also be required to provide proof of your student status before we can open your account.

What can we accept as proof of student status?

Proof of student status must always be provided when opening a Student Account as an international student along with one other item proving your UK residential address.

You can provide any of the following:

UCAS/NMAS Letter:

  • The letter must be on headed paper.

  • It must also include the UCAS/NMAS application number and match the address on the application form.

  • Acceptance letter from the Nursing & Midwifery Admissions Service (NMAS) is acceptable too


Student Loan Company/LEA/SAAS Award Letter:

The award letter must: 

  • Have an address on that matches the one you use to apply for your Student Account.

  • Be on headed paper. 

 

University/College Letter of Acceptance/Enrolment Offer/ Enrolment Certificate:

  • Letters should be on headed paper and addressed to the Bank or to you at your application address.
    It can be an original letter, an email or an internet print

  • The letter must confirm you are onto the course and match the address on the application form

  • The letter must be issued by a Government/LEA/SAAS funded University/College. If issued by anyone else this is not acceptable.

  • Letters from a language schools are not acceptable.

  • The course must still have six months left to run for the letter to be accepted unless it’s an English course.

  • Where you are going to study an English course before another higher education/university course and the English course is less than six months long, you must provide details of the English course and the higher education course/university course that you intend to take after it.

The following is a list of the original documents confirming your UK address which we accept to open a Student Account for international students.

We can accept any of the below documents:

Letter Of Introduction from a recognised UK University/College


This letter must: 

  • Confirm that you have at least 6 months of your course remaining
  • Be on the university/college headed paper
  • Be addressed to NatWest Bank (not 'to whom it may concern')
  • Confirm your name & UK address (it must match the address on the application form)
  • Be issued by a Government/LEA/SAAS funded University/College
  • Confirm that accomodation has been arranged/supplied by the University/College if applicable

Original utility bill/statement

  • Gas, water, telephone, cable services, Satellite TV, or electricity bills are acceptable. (Mobile phone bills are not)
  • If providing this as proof of address, you will also be required to provide proof of your student status


Original UK Bank/Building Society or Credit Card Statement

  • If providing this as proof of address, you will also be required to provide proof of your student status

 

University/College Letter of Acceptance/Enrolment Offer

This letter must:

  • Be on headed paper and addressed to you at the address on the application form
  • Be an original letter, an email or an internet print out
  • State the course for which you are enrolled & match the address on the application form
  • Be issued by a Government/LEA/SAAS funded University or College
  • Confirm the course you are starting has at least 6 months left to run, from date of application to the Bank.
  • Explain details of the second course you intend to start if you are going to be undertaking an English course before further/higher education in the UK that lasts shorter than 6 months. 

Important:

  • Letters from language schools are not acceptable.

 

Tenancy agreement

The tenancy agreement must:

  • Be used in conjunction with a Passport or EU ID card for ID purposes
  • Be from a well known source i.e. a local council, housing association or known reputable letting agency. Or,
  • Be issued by the University or College that you are studying at
  • If providing this as proof of address, you will also be required to provide proof of your student status

 

UCAS / NMAS Letter

  • This letter must be on headed paper
  • It must also include your UCAS/NMAS application number and match the address on your application form
  • Acceptance letter from the Nursing & Midwifery Admissions Service (NMAS) is acceptable too
RBS International Students How do I open an account?

As an international student, you can only apply for our International Student Account in branch at the moment.

You will need to visit one of our local branches to provide proof of identity and proof of UK address, as well as proof of your student status.
