What is a standing order?

A standing order is an automatic regular payment but the amount debited is fixed. You set it up and only you can change it – for example, only you can change the amount taken or change the payment date. Rent or mortgage payments are often paid by a standing order. You can also set up a standing order to your savings account if you want to save regularly.

Standing orders function in a similar way to Direct Debits. The main difference is that you have the ability to set up, manage, amend and cancel a standing order at any time. It is now easier than ever to manage your standing orders through Direct Banking. You can now access standing orders and make changes from your computer or mobile, wherever you are in the world. Just make sure you have your card reader.

Change and amend a standing order

The main difference between a Direct Debit and a standing order is the control that you have over it. Because you have set it up you have the freedom to change and amend a standing order whenever you like. You can alter the amount currently being sent, change the frequency even change the account details. All of these can be done through your Digital Banking.

Cancel a standing order

Standing orders can be quickly and easily cancelled or temporarily stopped for a certain amount of time through your Digital Banking.

You can cancel a standing order online up to 6.00pm (UK time) on the day (weekday) before it is due to leave your account. Standing orders differ to Direct Debits when it comes to the cancellation process, as a standing order can be created, amended or cancelled by yourself. With a standing order once the money leaves your account, it can not be recalled.

If your standing order is due within 48 hours we will send you an email to confirm that it has been cancelled, so please make sure that we have your correct email address on file.
