Common myths around payments

Using your card in-store or online is one of the safest ways to make payments and complete purchases. We've gathered here some of the most common myths around card payments.

MYTH: If someone bumps into you, they could take money from your contactless card or steal your details.

Anyone doing this would need to be a retailer and have a retail account to receive the payment. They’d also have to be only a few centimetres from your card, so this is very unlikely to happen.

MYTH: You need to have a special shielded wallet to keep contactless cards safe.

You don’t need a special wallet to keep your contactless card safe. Additionally, if you have more than one contactless card in your wallet, a card clash will occur preventing the cards from being remotely read.

MYTH: Contactless cards have different protection guarantees.

We offer the same fraud guarantee on contactless transactions as other types of card transactions. We’ll refund any fraudulent transactions provided you haven’t acted fraudulently or with gross negligence (in line with our T&Cs and regulatory requirements).

MYTH: Everyone selling on social media/online marketplaces is trustworthy.

Be cautious when purchasing goods off social media or online marketplaces. Always do your research on the seller before making a purchase and if a seller tells you they can’t accept a card payment and asks you to send them money directly, stop and think – could this be a scam?

MYTH: Card reading machines can download personal data from my phone when I pay using my mobile device.

When paying with a mobile device no personal data is transferred, not even your card number.

MYTH: Mobile device payments are very safe and secure but they are only accepted by specific merchants.

Pay using your mobile device anywhere you see the contactless symbol and you don’t need a mobile signal to pay.
